Glendalough Single Malt Irish Whiskey 25 Years Old – This whiskey actually beat the Pot Still bottling to the Irish oak party; it’s aged in bourbon casks, then finished in oloroso sherry casks followed by a final dusting in virgin Irish oak. Unlike the Pot Still, there’s no mention of time spent in any of the above, but it adds up to 25 long years. The Glendalough Distillery was among Ireland’s first craft whiskey producers. It was founded by 5 friends with a mutual love of Irish whiskey and steeped in the lore and legend of Ireland. The. It was with a certain amount of trepidation that I agreed to receive today’s whiskey as a gift from the good people of Glendalough distillery. This whiskey wasn’t just gifted; it was also hand-delivered, in a crate, with a Tuath glass and wooden coasters made from the trees used to make the Irish Oak barrels.

It's sweet, but a candylike sweetness, not fruity. Finish is smooth. I just love its smooth vanilla flavor. I'm hoping that I get a bottle of 7 year old Glendalough for Christmas.

This comment comes from someone born within 10 miles of Bushmills, Co Antrim. Was very excited based on what I had seen here earlier.

Opened it up and poured some in a glass with one cube of ice. Initial impression was not good - harsh smell, almost of petrol - very high alcohol sniff.

Fortunately I braved it out. Glendalough has just a little bit of the harshness, but also a hint of sweet honey? No burn on the throat at the end.

If you can get over the initial sniff you will be very pleased! Flavourful and sweet, this easy-drinking whiskey is distinctly Irish.

Surprisingly good for such a young whiskey. Special offers, recommendations and expert advice to your inbox!

Food Match Grilled rosemary and garlic rack of lamb on colcannon cakes with a whiskey glaze. Now you may wonder how a distillery founded in could possibly have a 7 Year Old whiskey, let alone a 13 Year Old and this is where some real Irish magic comes into play, something quite unique in the whisky world.

Age: 7 Years Old. This is a whiskey that has promise, but for me, is just not ready right now. Personally, I think that it is definitely better than the Teeling Pot Still first-release, but not quite as good as the Dingle Pot Still first release.

Of course, the one thing all these whiskies have in common is that they are young. Perhaps there were commercial pressures involved in bringing them all to market so early, but I think patience and time would have helped all these releases immensely.

Interesting read. It is still pretty much Jameson and Teeling here. Thanks for the comment. But of course this is a problem affecting lots of whiskies right now, not just the Irish brands.

Thanks for being honest. There is one Irish blogger in particular who never gives a bad review everything is great or good I suppose they fear the free invites to tastings and bottles will dry up if they give an honest appraisal of anything which is sad because they could well afford to buy the bottles and honestly appraise them.

It was this that actually motivated me to start writing about whiskey. After buying whiskies that elsewhere were universally praised but upon consumption were found severely wanting I decided to try to add my voice to help counteract the false platitudes.

These people are looking at it from the wrong perspective. Eventually, hopefully, the tide will turn and the whisky industry will actively seek you all out to test their mettle.

A positive review here will be the only really meaningful endorsement in the business. It would be nice to think that this would be the case in the future.
